Abstract
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the level of activities of daily living(ADL) in early stage of stroke patients who aged over 65 years and to explore the factors to influence the change of the level of ADL.

Methods: The subjects were 89 stoke patients admitted to neurology department in a hospital. The data was collected during 1 year from January to December, 2007 used the Modified Barthel Index measurement. Descriptive statistics, x2-test, t-test, paired t- test, ANOVA, and Scheffe test with SPSS/Win 12.0 program were used to analyze the data.

Results: The level of ADL at admission was significantly differentiated by age and length of stay, but not differentiated by gender and hospital arrival time after attack. The level of ADL at discharge was significantly improved compared with those at admission, but no demographic and disease factors confirmed to influence the improvement of the level of ADL.

Conclusion: The level of ADL in early stage of stroke patients influenced by the factors of age and length of stay. It is necessary to confirm the factors to influence the change of ADL periodically and the rehabilitation programs for stroke patients should be focused on those factors.
